We are so lucky to have this little girl in our family. Not sure what we'd do without her! :-) Today she shared some of her 5-year-old wisdom with her Papa over the phone. Here's about how the conversation went:
P: "Lucia, have you finished your homework yet? What have you been working on?"L: "Oh, I'm doing a math paper with lots of questions. Do you want me to read one to you?"
P: "Sure!"
L: "What is 12 + 4?"
P: "Let me see. 12 + 4 is ... 16, I think."
L: "Let me count to see if you're right. *holds up fingers and counts up* 12, 13, 14, 15, 16. Yup, you're right, Dad!" (Leans over and whispers to me: "How does he know that?!")
P: "Great! It's good that you're doing your homework for school."
L: "Guess what, Dad! I already know how to do all the questions on my page!"
P: "Wonderful! But it's still good to practice, because that's what makes you get better and faster at the math problems. And did you know that I use math at my work every single day?"
L: *with GREAT shock and surprise* "Oh my goodness! That's crazy! Then you should've picked a DIFFERENT job ... like TAXI DRIVER! Then you wouldn't have to do math every day! And being a taxi driver is really interesting!"
Not sure if her Papa ever thought of being a taxi driver. If someone had told him that would be a way to get around having to do math every day, he might have considered it. :-)
